“Scotti isn’t able to keep him busy?”

“All the saucers that need upgrading are done, and there aren’t any other projects for him, right now.”

“Would you have time to help him?”

“Yip and Lita have a handle on things, no problem. I’m not that well oriented, myself, though.”

“Better than this bunch, I’d be willing to bet.”

“I’ll call Ozzie, and we’ll come and collect them. Surely we can get them headed in the right direction.”

Ell asked, “Who’s Ozzie?”

I said, “The best mechanic it has ever been my pleasure to meet. Surely you’ve heard of the band, haven’t you? He’s the bass player.”

“I see.”

“You’re fixin’ to.”

Ozzie came striding up, and said, “What’s up, Boss?”

I replied, “Ozzie, this is Ell. He’s green as grass, and so are his buddies. You think you could fix that?”

“Well, Boss, it can’t be as hard as being stuck with Ruth, all the way back to the surface, after we dug her up.”

“You’re probably right. He doesn’t seem anywhere near as chatty as she was.”

Ell, stuck his hand out to shake, tentatively. Ozzie shook with him, and said, “You don’t have to worry, Ell. I never damage humans by accident.”

Ozzie turned back to me. “All these fellas need to learn the Gene, and how we do things?”

“Them, and any other new crew you find wandering around lost. When you think you have them all, ask Gene if you missed any.”

“Got it, Boss. Joanna should be here any time, and then we’ll head out.”

“You need me to get their attention, or do you have it under control?”

Ozzie said, “I think I can take care of it, Boss. You might want to step back.”

Janet and I stepped back, and Ozzie said, “All right, you organics. Form up, and let’s see what I’ve got to work with.” I hadn’t known Ozzie had a drill sergeant voice, but he did a good job of it. “I can get somebody in here to paint feet on the floor, if you need it. I was under the impression you knew your behinds from holes in the ground. Apparently I was misinformed.” That got them moving. Once he got them formed up, he said, “Your job is to learn how this ship runs, and what you need to do to keep it running, so that you get to keep sucking wind. So far, you’ve had it easy. That ends now. Gene, introduce yourself.”

Gene said, “I’m Gene, the ship’s AI. I am aware of all parts of the ship, unless someone specifically requests privacy. At your rank, the only places you will be able to request privacy are your cabins, and toilet facilities. I am available to help you at all times. I can provide a light trail, if you lose track of where you are in the ship, or I can get you assistance, if you so require. I can also connect you with anyone on the ship, if you ask. Since I see the whole ship, I will know if you are where you should be, and if you are doing what you are supposed to.
